Eye Contact Builds Connection

Tip:

Did you know you could make one simple tweak to improve your training videos, social media content, webinars, or other video-based lessons?

When you’re constantly looking at your screen instead of the camera, it can feel like you’re talking past your audience. Looking into the camera creates a stronger sense of direct connection, especially when you’re teaching, coaching, or explaining something important. After all, you don’t want your viewers to feel like they’re watching you talk to your screen.

A little more intentional eye contact can make your videos feel more personal, engaging, and professional without any fancy equipment or complicated editing.

Notes:

  • Treat the Camera Like a Person
Instead of thinking about the camera as a piece of equipment, think of it as the person you’re teaching. Look into the lens when you’re making an important point, explaining an idea, or speaking directly to your audience. That small shift can make your video feel much more personal and conversational like you’re talking to your viewer (not just speaking to your screen).
  • Stay on Track Without Memorizing
Looking at the camera doesn’t mean you have to perform your entire lesson from memory. Teleprompters, notes, slides, and picture-in-picture are all resources that can help you stay on track – just remember to position them in a way that doesn’t pull your eyes away from your audience too often.
  • Make Eye Contact When You’re the Focus
If you’re teaching a hands-on process or demonstrating software, your audience naturally needs to watch your screen or demonstration. Making an effort to look into the camera during key moments helps reinforce that personal connection and makes viewers feel like they’re truly learning with you by their side.

Next Steps:

  • Record a short video and pay attention to where your eyes go when you’re talking.
  • Move your notes, script, or presentation window as close to your camera as possible.
  • Try setting up a teleprompter or picture-in-picture if you find yourself looking away too often.
  • Before you get in front of the camera remind yourself to talk to it like you’re talking to one person.
